Lately I've been into these hugely exciting graphics people are either printing onto one piece, or wearing head to toe in a satirical, cartoony fashion. Around my neighborhood of Bed-Stuy, people are rocking high energy outfits like this all the time. It's ah-mazing! Hyper-colorful characters are only appropriate for such a vibrant neighborhood. Inspiration on the way to the grocery store? Sign me up! Anyway, the first three images are by one of my favorite designers Jeremy Scott. This label always produces super fun pieces. Most of the others are from ID Magazine, my usual go-to for fashion and make up inspiration. The final image is from a label I just discovered from V Magazine, Ground Zero. Crazy, spacey looks coming out of this relatively young label! 

Of all of this, the Bart Simpson sweater is my personal favorite. I'm a 90s kid, what can I say?

Happy day after Halloween!! So being a costume designer obviously our national "Everyone Wears a Costume Day" is my favorite day of the year. Bonus points for New Yorkers, who come up with some of the most impressive and creative looks imaginable.

On that note, I jumped at the chance to help my roommate and sister (post coming soon) with their last minute costume panic moments. My roommate had a wonderful patchwork fur poncho given to her grandmother by her great-grandmother, which we turned into our version of a prehistoric cave-woman.

Tropical, Minimal, Colorful

Once upon a time I had a project making curtains for a "German minimalist". I thought I'd do some background research in case an intelligent discussion may be expected of me, because as a freelancer I'm always worried some minute detail such as botching a friendly conversation getting to know the client will cost me the project. Luckily, it paid off... aka I got paid. Thumbs up.

During my research I fell in love with a certain book, called Tropical Minimal. This lovely and enlightening book featured minimalist architecture and interior design in tropical locales, mostly in Australia and California. For anyone local and curious visit Kinfolk Studios in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Kinfolk is a cute bar encapsulating this style. In Tropical Minimal, the elements of more traditional minimalism were present in most cases. What drew me to this in particular was the presence of much more plant life than I had seen in most of the more traditional examples. Often the green of the plants was one of few colors present, which really showcased the bold yet organic beauty of plants native to warmer climates (also conveniently the only type of plant I have any chance of keeping alive).

This style is pretty awesome, and I thought I had found my dream decorating scheme until I stumbled upon a version I liked even better! I had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Camino Real in Mexico City on business last spring, and here I fell in love with what is now my dream scheme.  My biggest hesitation with attempting to decorate in any minimal style was color... I was unmoved by most of the examples I saw. I have always been excited about color, and adored the warm, bright, exciting color scheme of my South American neighbor's house as a child. Primary colors just seemed to boring, and the mostly neutral color scheme above left me feeling like something was missing. Then, Mexico City happened!

NYMF Opening Party Look: Hair

Hi y'all. It's been a long time since my last post... like forget what I even wrote long time... Anyway, I've started working on costumes for a new show, a Depression era circus themed musical titled The Awakening of Angel DeLuna for the New York Musical Theater Festival starting July 12th. Although I have a tremendous amount of work to do on the costumes, being a fashion person by background and at heart I am instead unwisely using my time to plan my look for the opening night party. So in keeping with the circus theme as an excuse to wear wacky stuff AND rhinestones in public!! Let the planning begin. I happen to have an old mock up given to me from my last circus gig, the bottom half of a Mardi Gras doll inspired costume for our handstand artist Melanie Chy. It was all messed up when I got it, having been a first mock up of velvet which was later remade entirely out of a more traditional spandex instead. Fortunately for me, the velvet is pretty freakin' sweet. I added a leather waistband to drag it in the direction of fashion and make it a little less costume-y, so I can wear it out of the house! Before I get ahead of myself, right now the planning revolves around hair. I am conducting two exp-hair-iments as I like to call them on my head right now in attempt to achieve something like this:

I have pin curl attempt on one side, and crimp attempt on the other. So I'll wake up looking pretty crazy, but I'm working from home tomorrow so whatever. We'll see how it goes!
